Preparation

Before beginning the installation, it is important to prepare the doorway and gather the necessary tools. Measure the doorway opening to ensure that the prehung door will fit properly. Remove any existing door trim or casing and make sure the doorway is level and square.

Positioning the Door

Once the doorway is prepared, position the prehung door in the opening. Align the door so that the jambs are parallel to the walls and the head jamb is level. Use a level to ensure the door is plumb both vertically and horizontally.

Securing the Door

Secure the prehung door to the rough opening by driving screws through the jambs into the framing. Start by securing the hinges side first, then the latch side. Make sure the screws are long enough to penetrate into the framing at least 1 1/2 inches.

Installing the Trim

Once the door is secured, install the door trim. The trim conceals the gap between the door jambs and the wall. Start by installing the head trim, then the side trim, and finally the base trim. Secure the trim with finish nails or adhesive.

Finishing Touches

Completing the installation involves adding any finishing touches. Install the door handle or knob and strike plate. Check that the door opens and closes smoothly, and make any necessary adjustments to the hinges or strike plate.
