Installing a Prehung Interior Door with Trim

Replacing an interior door can be an intimidating task, but with the right tools and a little patience, it can be a rewarding experience. Prehung interior doors come with the door already installed in the frame, making installation relatively simple. Follow these steps to install a prehung interior door with trim:

Pry bar

Step 1: Remove the Old Door

Use a pry bar to remove the casing around the old door. Then, use a hammer to remove the nails that are holding the door frame in place. Once the nails are removed, you can carefully lift the door frame and door out of the opening.

Step 2: Install the New Door Frame

Position the new door frame in the opening and shim it as needed to ensure it is plumb and level. Use screws to secure the door frame to the studs.

Step 3: Install the Door

Lift the door into the opening and align it with the frame. Use a level to make sure the door is level, then insert the hinge pins into the top and bottom hinges. Hammer the hinge pins into place using a nail set.

Step 4: Trim the Doorway

Measure the height and width of the doorway opening. Cut the trim to these measurements using a miter saw. Apply caulk to the back of the trim and press it into place around the doorway opening. Secure the trim with brad nails.

Step 5: Finish the Installation

Once the trim is installed, apply caulk around the edges of the frame and door. This will help to seal out air and moisture. Allow the caulk to dry completely before using the door.
