Removing Interior Door Casing: A Step-by-Step Guide

Interior door casing, the decorative trim around door frames, often requires replacement due to damage or aesthetic changes. Removing casing can seem daunting, but it's relatively straightforward with the right tools and techniques. Here's a step-by-step guide to guide you through the process:

Gather Tools and Materials:

  • Crowbar or pry bar
  • Hammer or rubber mallet
  • Nail punch or small nail
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Carpenter's knife or utility knife
  • STUD FINDER (optional)

1. Identify Nail Locations:

Before prying, locate nail heads along the casing. Tap lightly with a hammer or rubber mallet to drive them below the surface. Use a nail punch or small nail to create a recess around each nail head.

2. Remove Nails:

Slide a pry bar or crowbar under the edge of the casing near a recessed nail head. Carefully pry the casing away from the wall until the head is exposed. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the nail head and remove it completely.

3. Cut through Caulk:

If the casing is sealed with caulk, use a carpenter's knife or utility knife to cut through it along the edges of the casing. This will help loosen the casing and prevent tearing.

4. Pry off Casing:

Insert the pry bar between the casing and the wall. Gently pry the casing loose from the wall, working gradually along its length. If the casing is stubborn, you may need to use a hammer or rubber mallet to assist in prying.

5. Remove Jamb Extension (Optional):

If your door has a jamb extension, it's a small strip of trim covering the space between the casing and the door frame. Use the pry bar to gently remove the jamb extension by prying it away from the frame.

6. Inspect and Clean:

Once the casing is removed, inspect the door frame and wall for any damage or irregularities. Fill any holes or gaps with caulk or wood filler. Use a damp cloth to wipe away debris.

Tips:

  • Always wear safety glasses when working with tools.
  • Test the strength of the nails before prying to avoid damaging the casing.
  • Use a STUD FINDER to locate studs within the wall for added support when prying.
  • Be patient and take your time, especially when removing nails.
  • If you encounter any difficulty, don't hesitate to seek professional assistance.
